Unemployment rate rises to 8.9%

The unemployment rate in the United States rose to 8.9% in the month of April, the highest rate since 1993, with 13.7 million people out of work.The total number of people receiving jobless benefits climbed to 6.35 million.

The US has lost more than five million jobs since the recession started in late 2007.
