Computer malfunction lead to “overtime” at NYSE - DOW still down 200 after market close at 4:15 PM
Today (July 02 2009) computer glitch at NYSE Euronext lead to extension of trading session by 15 minutes to 4:15 PM , NASDAQ ended the trading session on time as it is independently operated by NASDAQ OMX.NYSE Euronext headquartered in New York city operates multiple exchanges notably NYSE - New York Stock Exchange.
It is believed that recent system upgrades performed to bring down trade execution time and server issues lead to backlog of orders , that prompted officials to request extension of trading session to accommodate the trades before the long weekend. July 4th , Independence day is observed on Friday on July 3 and is a trading holiday. Not long ago (June 09) similar system issues at NYSE resulted in suspension of trades on 200 securities for about 40 minutes.
All said and done even after “Overtime” , DOW finished sharply lower down by 200 points due to the disappointing employment numbers released today.
